Obituary of Nancy Burns

Nancy Burns (nee Conte) of Indian Land, SC, passed away on Jan 5, 2024, after a short illness.

Nancy was born on Laforge Ave, Staten Island, NY, on Oct 5, 1935.  She is predeceased by her parents, Mollie and Tom Conte, by her brother Louis Conte and her sister-in-law Margaret Conte, by her husband, William J. Burns, and by her companion of 17 years, Ted Godlewski.  Nancy’s former husband Charles Dietsch, passed away in January 2023.

Nancy began her working career in 1967 working for Frank B. Sterner Insurance Company, Staten Island, NY.  In 1978, when her daughter began high school at St. Peter’s, she started working in Manhattan.  She would drop her daughter off at school and then take the S.I. Ferry into work every day.  She first worked for Chase Manhattan Bank at One New York Plaza and ending her career in 1997 as an Office Manager at Salomon Brothers in their Corporate Bond Research Department.  During her time at Salomon, Nancy took advantage of her lunch hour by walking along the Manhattan river. Nancy also had a relationship with a local vendor who sold hot dogs and every June, she would buy a case of Sabrett hot dogs from him.  These hotdogs, and many other dishes, were enjoyed by her family and friends as Nancy and Bill had a party in honor of St. Anthony – her patron Saint.

In 2002, Nancy and Bill moved to Jackson, NJ.  Nancy became active in the Westlake community, and in 2007, her and Ted won the Bacci tournament.  Nancy enjoyed travelling – especially to Bermuda, where her and Bill travelled once a year for their anniversary.  Nancy also travelled to Italy and London.  Nancy enjoyed trips to Atlantic City and Broadway plays and reading on her Kindle.  Nancy also enjoyed shopping – particularly clothes shopping.  Most of all, Nancy enjoyed spending time with her family.

Nancy is survived by her son Thomas (Susan), daughter Laura (Josephine), stepson Michael (Alice), grandchildren Christopher (Megan), Alyssa, Kaitlyn (David), Andrew James (Starla), Jessica, and Caroline.  She is also survived by six great-grandchildren – Cashton, Aiden, Ryan, Emily, Ava, and James.

Nancy is also survived by her sister Jean Burrell (Jack) and brother Thomas Conte (Terri).  She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Nancy was well-known for her lasagna, eggplant parmigiana, and spinach balls. She will be missed by all.
