Robert C. McGirr, Owner and Manager
A lifelong Monmouth County resident, Bob received his B.A. in Business Administration from the University of Tampa in 1974 and graduated from the American McAllister Institute, NYC, with a mortuary degree in 1976. He purchased C.H.T. Clayton & Son Funeral Home from the Clayton family in 1978. Mr. McGirr built a new state of the art facility which opened in 2005 as Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home, and moved the business to its current location. He has committed himself to a lifetime of community service within Freehold Township and Monmouth County.
A former Freehold Township Committeeman who served as Deputy Mayor in 2010, Bob also served as the Chairman of the Planning Board from 1998 to 2009, a member of the Freehold Township Board of Adjustment, Chairman of the Foundation Board at CentraState Medical Center and as President of The Sunrise Optimist Club, where he continues to be a member. His past community involvement also includes being a member of the CentraState Healthcare System Board of Trustees, Chairman of the Western Monmouth YMCA Board of Directors, member of the Western Monmouth YMCA Board of Trustees, President and coach for the North Howell Little League and a Board member of The Norkus Charitable Foundation.
To date, Bob continues to serve as a Trustee of the CentraSate Healthcare System Foundation Board, and as a member of Collier Services Foundation Board of Trustees.
Mr. McGirr has received the Distinguished Service Award from the Western Monmouth YMCA in 1989, the Circle of Excellence Award for Community Service from the Western Monmouth County Chamber of Commerce in 1996, and the Good Scout Award from The Monmouth Council of Boy Scouts in 2005. He has also been recognized as a Guest of Honor at the CentraState Healthcare System Auxiliary Annual Charity Ball in 2009 and as an Honoree at the Collier Youth Services Annual Gala 2015.
Bob is a member of the Monmouth and Ocean County Funeral Directors Association, the New Jersey State Funeral Directors Association and the National Funeral Directors Association. He is a parishioner of the Co-Cathedral of St. Robert Bellarmine, and a member of Manasquan River Golf Club, Brielle and The Loxahatchee Golf Club, Jupiter, FL.
W. Arthur Sznyter, Funeral Director
Art hails from Dickson City, PA. He is a third generation funeral director licensed since 1965, and is licensed in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, . He joined Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home in 1988, after having worked with funeral homes in Scranton, PA, Trenton and East Brunswick. Art is a Vietnam War veteran, and finished his military career in the New Jersey National Guard. He has served as the Keyport Borough President and Finance Chairman, and is a former President of the Keyport Chamber of Commerce. Art served as President of Monmouth and Ocean Funeral Directors Association from 2006- 2008, and is also a member of the New Jersey and National Funeral Directors Association. He and his wife Mary reside in Freehold Township, and have two daughters and one son.
Craig W. Morcom, Funeral Director
Craig was born and raised in Neptune City. He received his B.S. in Business Management in 1998 from the E. Craig Wall School of Business at Coastal Carolina University. Craig completed his education from American Academy McAllister Institute, NYC in their Mortuary Degree Program and an internship for the State of New Jersey in 1999. He has worked for Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home since 1989. Craig and his wife Julia reside in his childhood home in Neptune City, and are parents to two children.
Murry J. Conway, Jr. , Funeral Director
Murry was born and raised in Point Pleasant. He graduated from Georgian Court College in 2000, now Georgian Court University. He taught Religion at Trenton Catholic Academy in Hamilton, and Red Bank Catholic HS. Murry attended Immaculate Conception Seminary at Seton Hall University, where he pursued Masters degrees in Divinity and Theology until he left the seminary to join Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home in 2009. He attended Mercer Community College to obtain his Certificate in Mortuary Science and obtained his Funeral Directors license. Murry is a Eucharistic Minister and a certified Funeral Celebrant. His spirituality and reverence are highly valued to those in mourning. He and his wife Betsey reside in South River and are parents to two young boys.
Kaitlyn Schaeffer, Funeral Director
Kaitlyn was born and raised in Jackson. She joined the staff at Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home in 2012. Prior to her decision to pursue a career as a Funeral Director, Kaitlyn worked in the Emergency Department at CentraState Medical Center in Freehold Township, where she was training to be a registered nurse. Her compassion as a caretaker is a trait she brings to her work on a daily basis. She graduated from Mercer County Community College with both an Associate’s Degree in Applied Science and a Certificate of Proficiency in Funeral Service. Kaitlyn holds a dual license in New Jersey since 2014 and in Pennsylvania since February of 2015. She is currently a member of the New Jersey State Funeral Directors Association and the National Funeral Directors Association. Kaitlyn and her husband Sean are proud new owners of a home in Howell.
John H. Doherty, III, Funeral Director
John was born in New Brunswick and raised here in New Jersey, California, and Illinois. He graduated from Marlboro High School in 2007. John attended the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science in 2010 and began working for a local funeral home in the Pittsburgh area. John received his Funeral Directors license in Pennsylvania in 2015, as well as a Crematory Operator Certification. John joined us in 2015 and received his New Jersey Funeral Director's license in 2017.
Alexandra Loures, Intern
Alexandra was born and raised in Manalapan. She graduated from Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School and received her cosmetology license from Monmouth County Vocational School, Hazlet, in 2010. Alexandra worked in the medical billing field before attending Mercer County Community College to receive her Associates Degree in Funeral Service. She is currently a registered intern and is pursuing her New Jersey Funeral Director’s license.
Typically not seen during the funeral, their presence behind the scenes is nonetheless critical to the day-to-day operation of our facilities. Our support staff plays an important role in ensuring our high standard of service. We are proud of their dedication and commitment.
Donald R. McGirr (Book Keeper/Technical Support Manager)
Don is a lifelong Monmouth County resident, and has worked at Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home since 2012. He graduated from Trenton State College, (now the College of New Jersey) in 1980 with a B.S. in Criminal Justice. Prior to joining our team, he was a member of the Howell Township Police Department from 1975 until his retirement in 2000 as a sergeant. He has also been employed as an adjunct professor of Computer Science at Brookdale Community College and a Network Support Consultant for the New York City Police Department. Don is a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer and a Cisco Certified Academy Instructor. His expertise in computers is pertinent to the everyday workings of the business. Don, his wife Ellen, and their sons, Raymond and Ian live in Howell.
Lisa Avallone Murphy, Executive Assistant
Lisa grew up in Freehold Township, and graduated from Freehold Township High School in 1985. After working in a law firm and in the building industry, Lisa joined the staff at Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home in 2011. She is uniquely qualified for her position as she is often the first face seen when entering the funeral home, and one of the most recognizable. This can be attributed to her deep involvement in the community, and a lifelong fixture on the public scene with her mother who served as a committee person in Freehold Township for twenty-five years. Everyone finds great comfort in the level of personal service she provides. Her most recent project has been the addition of Ensley, our “Therapy Dog in Training,” as she has assumed responsibility for his care and training. Lisa is a Notary Public, a member of the Freehold Township High School PTA, and a parishioner at the Co-Cathedral of St. Robert Bellarmine. She and her husband Chris live in Howell with their two sons, Jackson and Griffin.
Kenneth M. Finn, Funeral Assistant
Mr. Finn was born in New York, raised in Ireland and returned to the USA at the age of twenty one. He moved to New Jersey in 1973 and raised his family in Freehold Township. He is a member of the Co-Cathedral of St. Robert Bellarmine where he was an usher for thirty years, and a Eucharistic minister for many years at both the church and CentraState Medical Center. In his earlier days, Ken was a world class soccer player, including playing for the U.S. World Cup team for three years. He passed along his experience by serving as a coach or boys and girls soccer in Freehold Rec and travel teams for many years. He has been working with us since 2001.
Patrick Lavin, Funeral Assistant
Pat is a resident of Famingdale. He is a retired police officer from Elizabeth, NJ where he served on the force from 1973 until 2005. Pat is a lector at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church for 38 years, and Past President and active member of the Howell Lions Club since 2007. He is an avid golfer and biker, and a member of the Union County Police & Fire Pipe & Drum Band since 2001. Pat was a welcome addition to the Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home in 2001.
Raymond C. McGirr, II, Funeral Assistant
Ray is a lifelong Howell Township resident. He graduated from from St. Rose High School, Belmar, where he was a four year Varsity Hockey player. He also attended Brookdale Community College, and worked in retail sporting goods sales before joining us in November 2016. Ray continues to play and coach hockey, and brings his team spirit to the office, as he is involved in multiple areas of the business.
Ensley T. McGirr, Therapy Dog (in Training)
Ensley is a Miniature Australian Labradoodle, and is named for C. Ensley Clayton, the former owner of C.H.T. Clayton & Son Funeral Home, the precursor to Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home. Ensley was brought on board in 2017 and is currently undergoing basic obedience training in anticipation of becoming a certified therapy dog.
