Obituary of John Joseph Tortorelli

John “Johnny” Tortorelli, of Freehold passed away five days shy of his 90th birthday at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune on Saturday, August 20, 2022. He was born and raised in Brooklyn and lived briefly on Staten Island before settling to Freehold 29 years ago. John was a proud Army Veteran and was stationed at Fort Dix. He was a member of the Association of Oldetime Barbell and Strongmen (AOBS) and enjoyed the company of the many friends he made there.  John was a self-made man who always took pride in his work as a contractor. He met his wife, June, at the age of 16 at a movie theater; together they went on to raise a beautiful family and just recently celebrated 70 blissful years of marriage. John loved social events and made a celebration out of every occasion. He enjoyed dancing, traveling, and telling a good story. His greatest gift in life was his family; he was a devoted husband, father, and lovingly known as “Papa.”

John is predeceased by his daughter, Joanne Moyer. He is survived by the love of his life, June Tortorelli of Freehold; two children, April Nichols and her husband, David of Manalapan and Lou Tortorelli and his wife, Michelle of Howell; son in-law, John Moyer of Howell; six grandchildren, Jamie, Jessica, Cameron, Chandler, Kaila, and Brooke; three great grandchildren, Travis, Trevor, and Walker.

A private funeral mass will be held at the Co-Cathedral of St. Robert Bellamine, 61 Georgia Road, Freehold Township.  Interment will be held at Brigadier William C. Doyle New Jersey Veterans Cemetery, 350 Province Line Road, Arneytown.
