Obituary of Robert P. Murray

Robert P. Murray, 88, of Lakewood passed away surrounded by his family on Saturday, February 27, 2021 at home.  He was born and raised in Washington, D.C. and had lived in Brooklyn and Staten Island before settling in Lakewood 20 years ago.  Robert proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean War and continued his service in the Army Reserves.  He received his Master’s Degree in Public Administration from John Jay College in New York and worked as a police officer for the NYPD for 20 years.  After his retirement in 1982, Robert was a history teacher and boy’s track coach at St. Peter’s High School, Staten Island.   He was also a Safety Director at NYU Downtown Hospital in New York City.  Robert was a 4th Degree Knight of Knights of Columbus, Council #2143, Lakewood. He also served as a Catholic Eucharistic Minister for over 40 years. Above all else, Robert was a loving husband, devoted father, and caring grandfather and great grandfather.

Robert was predeceased by his parents, Robert and Helen Murray; sister, Helen Murray; and brothers-in-law, Albert Otranto, Bob MacMahon, and William Cassano. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mary E. Murray of Lakewood; children, Mary Collins and her husband, Jerry of Croton-on-Hudson, NY, Kathy Kuberski and her husband, Richard of Jackson, Margaret Anthony and her husband, George of Middletown, Barbara Waldron and her husband, Michael of Howell, and Elizabeth Yabroudy and her husband, Joseph of Staten Island, NY; grandchildren, Kerry, Richie, Julianne, Katie, Michael, Billy, Kayley, and Anthony; four great grandchildren; brother, Charles Murray and his wife, Formika; and sister, Patricia Otranto.

A visitation will be held at the Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home, 100 Elton-Adelphia Road (Route 524), Freehold Township on Sunday, March 7, 2021 from 5:00 to 8:00 PM.  Relatives and friends are invited to attend his 10:00 AM Funeral Mass on Monday, March 8, 2021 at the Co-Cathedral of St. Robert Bellarmine, 61 Georgia Road, Freehold Township. Relatives and friends are invited to participate via webcast through Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home’s website HERE.  Interment will follow in Brigadier General William C. Doyle NJ Veterans Cemetery, Arneytown.
