Obituary of Jay Hyland

Jay H. Hyland, 61, of Millstone Township passed away surrounded by his family on Sunday, May 15, 2016 at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township. Jay was born in Long Branch, and was raised and had lived in Marlboro before settling in Millstone Township in 1989. He was a graduate of The Ohio State University. Jay enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1976 and served in 1st Platoon Bravo Company until 1978. He then transferred to USAF, NJ Air National Guard and served in 108th Air Refueling Wing, McGuire AFB as a command pilot until his retirement in 2001 at the rank of Major. In retirement, Jay worked at Fort Monmouth, CECOM in the Operations Center as an Emergency Operations Officer and then as a Mobility Officer for the First Army Division East, 174th Infantry Brigade at Fort Dix. He was a member of the Roosevelt Fire Department. Jay was a true outdoorsman, who liked to hunt and fish. At the age of 16, he was the youngest Hunter Safety Instructor in the State of New Jersey. He was a farmer and enjoyed volunteering with the Allentown FFA Chapter. There wasn't much Jay couldn't fix, and he could always be found tinkering with something. Jay was predeceased by his father, Jay F. Hyland in 2009. He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Rita Hyland; a son, Jay N. Hyland of Millstone Twp.; a daughter, Heidi A. Hyland of Millstone Twp.; his mother, Lillian Hyland of Millstone Twp.; a brother, William Hyland of Millstone Twp; his mother-in-law, Gloria Janwich of Marlboro; and a sister-in-law, Marylynn Janwich of Marlboro. Visitation will be held at the Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home, 100 Elton-Adelphia Road (Route 524), Freehold Township on Sunday, May 22, 2016 from 2:00 to 6:00 PM. Relatives and friends are invited to gather at the funeral home on Monday, May 23, 2016 at 8:30 AM for the procession to his 10:00 AM Funeral Mass at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 91 Stillhouse Road, Millstone. Interment will follow at Brigadier General Wm. C. Doyle NJ Veteran's Cemetery, Arneytown. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in memory of Jay be made payable to Allentown High School (please designate in the check memo section "Allentown FFA") and mailed to Allentown FFA Chapter, Allentown High School, 27 High Street, Allentown, NJ 08501.
