Obituary of Adrien "AT" Thomas
Adrien “AT” Thomas
1972 – 2026
Adrien “AT” Thomas, 53, of Farmingdale, passed away peacefully at home on February 12, 2026, surrounded by his loving wife and children after a courageous battle with ALS. Adrien faced his illness with strength, dignity, and unwavering love for his family. He will be remembered for his warmth, loyalty, sense of humor, and the deep devotion he had to those closest to him. He was welcomed into heaven with a giant hug from his best friend and brother, Mac, who preceded him in passing.
Adrien is survived by his devoted wife, Lisa; his children, Clayton, Tristan, Makenzie, Lanie, and Adrien; his in-laws, Edward and Susan Blewett; his brother-in-law, Edward Blewett and his wife Nicole; and many extended family members and friends whose lives were better for having known him; and his parents, Larry and Nancy Thomas.
Adrien laced up his first pair of skates at just five years old, and from that moment on, hockey was never just a sport — it was who he was. He was involved in multiple organizations throughout his life, playing competitively through college and building friendships and stories that lasted a lifetime.
His love for the game didn’t stop when his playing days ended. Instead, he moved behind the bench, coaching high school hockey at numerous schools over the years. His passion, intensity, and unmistakable presence eventually earned him induction into the High School Hockey Hall of Fame — a fitting honor for someone who gave so much to the sport.
Among his more memorable coaching chapters were his time with the Red Bank Generals and the Jersey Shore Wildcats, though there were many teams and players in between who were fortunate enough to call him “Coach.” When you think of AT, you think hockey.
AT was dedicated to his autistic students at Howell High School for more than 15 years — a job that, if you knew him, might have seemed like the least likely career path imaginable. He didn’t exactly fit the quiet, reserved educator stereotype. But that’s what made him exceptional. With patience, heart, and a perfectly timed sense of humor, he handled every situation in a way only AT could. He came home with stories that had us laughing in disbelief, proving time and again that he had a gift for reaching his students in ways no one else could.
While AT found great success on the ice and in the classroom, that was only part of who he was. AT was a man who truly lived — and lived loudly. Music was always playing somewhere in the background of his life, and he knew the lyrics to just about everything. He could quote movies better than anyone, delivering one-liners with perfect timing and absolute confidence. But above all else, AT lived for his family and his people. The Eagles Nest get-togethers, long beach days, the Academy Street hangouts, and the legendary trips to Lake Placid — these were his happy places. Being surrounded by friends and family, music on, cocktails flowing, stories getting louder as the night went on — that was AT in his purest form. That is what we will always remember him for.
