Obituary of Maria DiGiorgi
Maria DiGiorgi, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, sister-in-law, and friend, passed peacefully into the arms of the Lord on the feast day of St. Padre Pio, September 23, 2025. She was 80 years old. She's predeceased by her brother Salvatore and son Benny.
Maria was born in Militello, Sicily, in 1944, in the shadow of World War II. From an early age, she showed resilience and devotion, helping to raise her younger brother, Sal, while her parents worked tirelessly to support their family. When she was 8 years old, Maria moved to Lentini, Sicily. At the age of 17, she met and married her love, Salvatore. Their lifelong bond began with handwritten letters and photos exchanged across continents as Salvatore worked to establish a future in America. Their marriage of 63 years is a testament to enduring love and faith.
Maria bravely immigrated to the United States without knowing the language, yet she quickly adapted and built a beautiful life rooted in family and tradition. Together with Salvatore, she raised their son, Benny, and daughter, Grace, balancing strength and tenderness.
A gifted seamstress and exceptional cook, Maria poured love into her home and family. She became a cherished aunt of her beloved nieces and nephews, and the proud grandmother of Adrienne, Michael, and Gabriela, who brought her immense joy. Her love extended beyond people—she adored her pets Prince, Ashley, Nerina, Fluffy and Misty, each one a companion and comfort in her life.
Maria’s heart always remained connected to her roots in Sicily - she treasured her cousins there who were more like sisters (Carmela, Rita, and Maria Rosa) and kept those family ties alive across oceans and years. A woman of deep faith, Maria was devoted to St. Dominic Church, where she faithfully attended Mass and prayed the rosary daily. She loved playing cards at St. Athanasius with her dear friends in Brooklyn. Her greatest spiritual devotion was to Padre Pio, a devotion so profound that her passing on his feast day is a sign of her steadfast faith.
Maria will be remembered for her selflessness, her strength, and the countless ways she put others before herself. She leaves behind a legacy of love, resilience, and faith that will live on in her family and all who knew her.
She will be deeply missed and forever cherished.
Visitation will be held at the Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home, 100 Elton-Adelphia Road (Route 524), Freehold Township on Thursday, September 25, 2025 from 3:00 to 7:00 PM.
